:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ed -- THIS. IS. IT. : This is the book to read if you care for a genuine, heartfelt, and truly unique perspective on the great, late Mr Bourdain. Posthumous accountings of his life and times and exploits are coming available now, and surely most have their place, and their audience. Personally, this is the book I'd care to read, and I suspect that Tony would agree. It smartly detours any attempt at analyzing the tragic end, which is in my opinion futile. It also avoids the sprawling biography angle which is totally valid, just not all that fun. Instead, Tom gives us a series of montages and anecdotes, all very personal and all very raw, drawing from the 10+ years he spent attached-at-the-hip to this fascinating man, and the result is pitch perfect. The good, the bad, the complicated, the insanity, the willfulness, the paranoia, the love of life, the fear of the unknown. Full disclosure: I worked on Anthony's shows for many years, just as the author, Tom Vitale, did. This book does a better job of capturing the complicated, brilliant mess that was Tony and the projects he invited us along to make than anything I've seen or read. It is a joyous celebration and a much needed eulogy of a person none of us are ready to let go of, even now. "In The Weeds" is an insider's look, but it is so much more than a travelogue. This book is a long string of frat party-like trips where Tony shows up amidst the chaos and does something wonderful. I didn’t expect it to be so moving, insightful, and at the same time absolutely hilarious. As a fan of Anthony and his shows, since his passing, I've seen the recent film and read the oral biography which are both great but this, in my opinion, is the most complete picture of Anthony that we now have. I haven't watched almost any of his shows, but I thought this would be an interesting read and it is, but that's not why I'm writing this review. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from William Gaither -- Great Read About Tony : It seems like this book is currently getting overshadowed in the press by Laurie Woolover’s book about Tony, as both were released around the same time. I chose Tom’s book because I valued his first-hand account of being there with Tony on so many of those episodes that I’ve watched countless times, and I was not disappointed! Tom is a fantastic writer, and Tony’s voice was clearly very influential on him in the best way possible. Learning about how the show came together and hearing stories from working with Tony for so many years was awesome. If had to say anything critical about this book at all, it’s that some of the magic has been lost for me now when I watch old episodes, because I realize how much hard work, timing, emotion, strategy, and physical toil went into making them, yet they’ve always looked so effortless and spontaneous on the screen, which just goes to show what a wonderful job this crew did in making magic for the rest of us to enjoy.
